Formulas Used in the Body Fat Calculator
The Body Fat Calculator employs two common methods:
U.S. Navy Method:
This method uses measurements of the waist, neck, and hip (for females) in addition to height:
Formula:
For males:
Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(Waist - Neck) − 70.041 × log10(Height)
+ 36.76
For females:
Body Fat % = 163.205 × log10(Waist + Hip - Neck) − 97.684 ×
log10(Height) − 78.387
Example:
A male with a waist circumference of 85 cm, neck of 40 cm, and height
of 180 cm:
Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(85 - 40) − 70.041 × log10(180) + 36.76
= 17.2%
BMI Method:
This method derives body fat percentage from BMI:
Formula:
For males:
Body Fat % = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × Age) − 16.2
For females:
Body Fat % = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × Age) − 5.4
Example:
A female with a BMI of 22 and age of 30:
Body Fat % = (1.20 × 22) + (0.23 × 30) − 5.4 = 23.1%
How to Calculate Body Fat Percentage
Body fat can be calculated using formulas based on inputs like weight, height, age, and gender. Here is an example formula:
Formula: Body Fat % = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × Age) − (10.8 × Gender) − 5.4
Note: For Gender, use 1 for males and 0 for females.
Example: A 25-year-old male with a BMI of 23.96:
Body Fat % = (1.20 × 23.96) + (0.23 × 25) − (10.8 × 1) − 5.4 = 16.3%
